Two Indian companies, among 134 recipients, were recognised at this year’s People’s Association (PA) Community Spirit Award, held on July 30 at Orchard Hotel.
The annual event celebrates corporate partners who are SMEs and have made an impact in the community, either through financial donations or their collaborations with PA on programmes to support the less fortunate and lower-income families.
Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs Edwin Tong, who is also the deputy chairman of PA, was the guest of honour.
He commended the award recipients for stepping up to build a more inclusive society.
“These awards speak to the kind of society that we want to build collectively. Six decades ago, Singapore faced a daunting challenge as a young nation. What we had was each other, with a commitment and a shared sense of purpose. Singapore stands proudly because of our ability to forge meaningful partnerships across all sectors of society,” said Mr Tong.
Gupta International and Thakral Corporation stood out for their sustained and meaningful efforts in supporting vulnerable groups across Singapore.
Recognising the rising costs of living and their impact on low-income families, Gupta International contributed S$18,000 in cash sponsorship to the Jalan with Your Buddy programme: a PA initiative that helps residents make informed and affordable grocery choices.
Incorporated in 2014, Gupta International does imports and exports of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Beyond financial support, Gupta International founder Aman Gupta, 43, along with his family members, volunteered as shopping buddies, walking side by side with residents to offer guidance on nutritional options and budgeting tips. This benefitted 240 families who gained both practical knowledge and emotional support.
In 2024, Gupta International extended over S$43,000 in sponsorships to five different community programmes, impacting nearly 2,040 residents.
“Volunteering is my way of connecting with the community. Social responsibility is in my blood, and I will serve the community as much as I can,” said Mr Aman.
Thakral Corporation was recognised for its impactful contributions. Known for its real estate investments in Australia, Japan, and Singapore and its consumer lifestyle brands across Asia, the company has consistently championed social causes in Singapore.
Since 2019, Thakral has supported the North East Growth Fund, which provides interim financial assistance to families with children under six years old.
In 2023, the company deepened its commitment by signing a three-year memorandum of understanding, pledging S$50,000 annually.
This steady support directly aids 124 young children each year with a three-month supply of milk powder and diapers, a lifeline for families navigating tough times.
“Our focus is always on children and to uplift them in our society. Investing in children has been our priority since then,” said Mr Lim Swe Guan, 71, the non-executive chairman of Thakral.
