Indian migrant domestic workers in Singapore were given an opportunity to relax, make new friends and, more importantly, learn about financial independence, healthcare and the support available to them at a special community fiesta on Aug 16.

Organised by the One Stop Centre (OSC) of the High Commission of India in Singapore, in association with Big At Heart, the Indian Migrant Domestic Workers Fiesta 2026 was held on the lawns of the High Commission at Grange Road.

The event brought domestic workers together with organisations offering banking, employment, healthcare, legal, shelter and mental well-being services, while combining the awareness drive with entertainment and recreational activities.

India’s High Commissioner to Singapore Shilpak Ambule said the objective went beyond providing participants with an enjoyable afternoon.

“The Indian MDW Fiesta is about more than bringing our community together; it is about giving our domestic workers practical tools to build greater independence — from opening a bank account, to knowing where they can turn for healthcare, shelter, legal assistance and emotional support,” he said.

Financial literacy was a key focus. POSB provided information on banking services and opening accounts, while the Centre for Domestic Employees (CDE) explained its membership, insurance and employment-related assistance, including its 24-hour helpline, employment advisory services and access to free legal clinics through partners.

HOME – Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics provided information on welfare assistance, shelter, employment and legal advice and skills development, while a Singtel distributor offered guidance on telecommunications services.

Health and well-being also featured prominently. Truecare Clinic conducted free basic health checks, Sahaja Yoga introduced participants to meditation and relaxation techniques, while Chair Yoga and Zumba got the women moving.

Henna art and Zentangle provided more leisurely creative activities.

For Ms Mini K. Kuttan, a domestic worker from Thrissur, Kerala, who has worked in Singapore for 11 years, the gathering provided both friendship and useful information.

“It was a fun and entertaining event. I enjoyed it as I got to make many friends,” she said.

But she was particularly interested in learning more about insurance.

“The costs for dental treatment are so high, and I wanted to know if I could get any benefits,” she said.

Ms Sridevi Karela, from West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, has worked in Singapore for 10 years and similarly welcomed the chance to interact with other domestic workers.

“It was a good opportunity to meet my fellow helpers and enjoy a good day out,” she said. “I found the One Stop Centre team very helpful in answering my questions. I found the whole event very beneficial.”

The fiesta also had a strong cultural and celebratory element, with performances by Maharashtra Mandal Singapore, Singapore Sindhi Association and Nupura Dance Academy. Tambola, Toss the Ring and prizes added to the festive mood, while participants received dinner bento boxes.

The OSC was established by the High Commission to ensure Indian women in distress can access confidential and coordinated assistance. It operates a 24-hour helpline and provides referrals and support covering legal, psychological, medical, shelter and welfare needs.

The fiesta expanded that mission by reaching domestic workers before problems necessarily develop into crises.

By putting practical information alongside music, exercise, games and social interaction, the organisers hoped participants would leave not only having enjoyed themselves, but knowing where to turn when they need assistance.
