Space agency launches two
Singapore satellites into orbit
The Indian Space Research
Organisation (Isro) on Saturday placed
two Singapore satellites, TeLEOS-2
and Lumelite-4, in orbit aboard the
Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, while
also carrying out experiments with
seven payloads attached to its PS4
upper stage, the space agency said.
The TeLEOS-2 satellite was
developed under a partnership
between the Defence Science and
Technology Agency of Singapore and
ST Engineering, a Singaporean
technology and engineering group.
Once deployed and operational, it
will be used to support satellite
imagery requirements of various
agencies in Singapore.
TeLEOS-2 carries a Synthetic
Aperture Radar (SAR) payload. It will
provide all-weather day and night
coverage.
Maoist rebels kill 11 security
personnel in Chhattisgarh attack
Maoist insurgents detonated an
explosive device on Wednesday in a
forested area in Chhattisgarh, killing
10 police officers and the driver of
their vehicle.
The state’s Health Minister T.S.
Singh Deo said the insurgents targeted
the policemen who were setting up
camps in Bastar district as part of a
campaign to clear the area of rebels.

Indian begins evacuating citizens
from Sudan
The first flight carrying 256 Indian
nationals evacuated from Sudan
landed in Delhi on Wednesday.
India is looking to rescue more of
its citizens from the strife-torn African
nation before the end of a tenuous
ceasefire between the regular army
and a paramilitary force. About 3,000
Indians are stranded in Sudan.
The ship INS Sumedha, carrying
278 Indian citizens, departed Port of
Sudan on Tuesday and was headed for
Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
Uttarakhand government official
killed by helicopter rotor
A government official in Uttarakhand
was killed on Sunday while trying to
take a selfie beside a whirring
helicopter in Kedarnath.
Mr Jitendra Kumar Saini was the
financial controller of Uttarakhand
Civil Aviation development authority.
The mishap took place at a helipad
in Kedarnath Dham.
Mana to be known as India’s
‘first village’
The Border Roads Organisation has
put up a signboard that reads “India’s
first village” at the entrance of
Uttarakhand’s Mana village at the
border with China.
“Now Mana will not be known as
the last but the first village of the
country,” Chief Minister Pushkar Singh
Dhami tweeted.
During a visit to the Chamoli
village in October last year, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi had said
border villages of the country are its
first villages and not the last as they
are usually called.
Minister rebukes Der Spiegel for
‘racist’ cartoon
A cartoon in the German magazine
Der Spiegel poking fun at India as it
becomes more populous than China
has been castigated as “racist” by
Indian ministers and officials.
The cartoon shows a rickety old
Indian train packed with people and
swarms of passengers atop it.
On a parallel track, a sleek Chinese
bullet train is seen with just two
drivers, looking surprised at the sight
of the Indian train.
According to United Nations
projections published on Monday,
India has a population of
1,425,775,850, surpassing China for
the first time.
Minister for Electronics and
Information Technology Rajeev
Chandrasekhar, reacting angrily,
tweeted: “Dear Cartoonist at
@derspiegel… Notwithstanding your
attempt at mocking India … it’s not
smart to bet against India under PM
@narendramodi ji…. In a few years
India’s economy will be bigger than
Germany’s.”
Gandhi appeals after court denies
stay of defamation conviction
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on
Tuesday appealed to the High Court in
Gujarat, seeking a stay of conviction in
a defamation case, challenging a lower
court’s ruling against his plea.
Gandhi was convicted last month
after comments he made were deemed
to be insulting to Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and other people
surnamed Modi.
The 52-year old scion of the
Congress party was sentenced to two
years’ imprisonment. His petition
seeking a stay of conviction was
rejected last week.
“We have filed an appeal
challenging the Surat district court’s
order,” Gandhi’s lawyer Pankaj
Champaneri said.
Gandhi also lost his parliamentary
seat following the conviction. His
sentence will remain suspended until
he exhausts all legal challenges.
Billionaire Hinduja family’s truce
uncertain, London court hears
India’s billionaire Hinduja family’s
apparent truce over the future of its
global business empire is at risk, a
lawyer representing patriarch Srichand
Hinduja told a London court on
Monday.
The lawyer said there were lawsuits
and “threatened lawsuits” between
members of the family, whose business
spans sectors including banking,
chemicals and healthcare, facing
further litigation.
A ruling published in November
said the Hindujas’ lawyers had told a
judge in June that they would end “all
disputes existing between them in all
jurisdictions”, including a lawsuit at
London’s High Court over the Hinduja
family’s assets.
Tamil Nadu puts bill extending
factory working hours on hold
Tamil Nadu has put on hold a bill that
would allow a 12-hour workday at
factories after talks with labour unions
who oppose the plan, a statement from
the government said on Monday.
Several labour unions including the
All India Trade Union Congress and
Centre of Indian Trade Unions had
opposed the bill and were planning a
one-day strike affecting workers from
tens of factories next month.
The Tamil Nadu government passed
the bill last week but it has yet to be
enacted.
At the time, it said those working
12 hours for four straight days would
get three paid days off each week. But
several workers raised concerns over
proper implementation of the rule at
factories.
“The government passed the bill,
aiming to attract big investments and
increase employment opportunities for
youngsters,” said Chief Minister M.K.
Stalin.

Bollywood actress Chrisann Pereira,
who was arrested in Sharjah for carry-
ing a memento that contained hidden
drugs in a case of alleged framing as
revenge, was released from prison on
Wednesday.
Her brother Kevin shared a video
on Instagram that showed their mother
jumping in joy while talking to
Chrisann in a video call.
“Chrisann is SET FREE!!! She will
be in India in the next 48 hours,”
Kevin wrote while sharing the video.
The actress is seen in tears in the
video as her mother and brother talk
to her.
Chrisann, who has worked in films
such as Sadak 2 and Batla House, was
arrested at Sharjah airport on April 1.
The Mumbai Crime Branch later
found out that the 27-year-old was
allegedly framed by a bakery owner in
revenge after a fight with her mother
Premila over a dog.
The police have arrested Anthony
Paul, the bakery owner, and Rajesh
Bobhate, an assistant general manager
in a bank.
Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Po-
lice (Crime) Lakhmi Gautam, who
oversaw the probe, said Anthony held
a grudge against Chrisann’s mother
and sent the actress to Sharjah on the
pretext of an audition for a web series.
She was made to carry a trophy
allegedly stuffed with cannabis.
Anthony, who lives at Mira Road
and runs bakeries in Malad and Bori-
vali, allegedly hatched the plan with
Bobhate.
His sister lives in the same building
as Premila at IC Colony in Borivali.
According to media reports, the
feud started during the Covid-19 lock-
down when Anthony got angry at
Premila’s dog for barking at him and
tried to beat it with a chair.
Premila was unhappy about this and
insulted him in front of others.
Anthony then decided to seek re-
venge and enlisted Bobhate’s help to
lure Chrisann to a five-star hotel in
Santacruz on March 25 on the pretext
of getting her an interview for an
international web series.
Premila told The Indian Express
that “it is a miracle” that her daughter
has been released.
“We are so happy and relieved,”
she said.
“We are hoping she will be in India
in the next 48 hours.
“There’s a process to be followed
over there in Sharjah where we have
to give a police report in Arabic. It is
very important to me that this gets
resolved immediately.”
When asked how Chrisann was
released, Premila said: “We have no
clue. When we spoke to her earlier in
the day, she said that she was called to
take her clothes (in which she was
taken to the prison). A few hours later,
she called saying that she had been
freed.
“We are not sure whose interven-
tion led to this but we are thankful to
everybody who supported us. I cannot
wait to see my girl.”
In a video clip released by the
family, Premila is seen telling her
daughter: “Chrisann you are in the
sun? You are free.”
A teary-eyed Chrisann is seen nod-
ding when her brother Kevin tells her
that her release would help others who
are lodged in the prison on wrongful
charges.
Anthony also allegedly sent DJ
Clynton Rodricks with a cake carrying
opium in February. Rodricks was ar-
rested in Sharjah airport and has been
in jail there since.

Kochi Water Metro ferried 6,559 pas-
sengers on Wednesday, a day after its
inauguration by Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi.
India’s first water-based metro ser-
vice in Kochi, a city in Kerala, operates
from 7am to 8pm. The eight electric
hybrid boats run on two routes – High
Court-Vypin and Vyttila-Kakkanad –
and will eventually connect Kochi with
10 nearby islands in the Arabian Sea.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vi-
jayan said the boats can ferry com-
muters from High Court Terminal to
Vypin Terminal in less than 20 min-
utes.
“This makes me happy. It is a
pleasure to travel like this and the
views are special,” said commuter
Hariraj.
“This is not like the regular public
transport system. The boat is very
clean. It has easy access and a good
ticketing system. And the air-condition-
ing is nice in this humidity.
“It will bring a big change to Kochi.
There is no doubt that people will use
the Water Metro on a daily basis.”
Funded by the Kerala government
along with a loan from German state-
owned investment and development
bank KfW, the Kerala Water Metro is a
Rs1,136.83 crore ($186 million)
project.
Once fully operational, it will con-
nect 10 islands around the port city
using 78 electric boats and 38 termi-
nals and will ferry around 34,000
passengers daily.
Kochi Water Metro won the French
Gussies Award for the best commercial
passenger electric boat last year.
The untapped tourism potential of
the islands dotting the backwaters will
be revealed once the Water Metro
project goes full-scale, reported The
New Indian Express.
“Our aim is to provide made-in-In-
dia solutions suited to local condi-
tions,” Mr Modi said at the inaugura-
tion, adding that increased connectiv-
ity via the new ferries could improve
“backwater tourism”.
According to tourism research
scholar Mahadevan P, the Water Metro
will lead to an increase in the number
of visitors.
“The novelty of it and also the
comfort the vessels provide are the
attractions,” he said.
Presently, all the water routes of
Kochi connect Ernakulam with Mat-
tanchery, Infrastructure development
works are for terminals in other places
are ongoing.
“Most of the islands are scattered to
the north of Ernakulam. Surprisingly,
visitors and a large section of the
Kochiites are unaware of these islands
and the immense tourism potential
they can offer,” said Mr Mahadevan.
“Thousands of tourists who come in
luxury cruise liners are taken by road
to Alappuzha and Kumarakom for
backwater experience. This is happen-
ing at a time when Ernakulam has a
treasure trove of pristine islands like
Thanthonnithuruthu, Mulavukadu,
Moolampilly, Pizhala, Kadamakkudy
and Kothad.”
Areas accessible primarily by
smaller watercraft are known as back-
waters. In Kerala, some can be reached
only by small canoes steered by experi-
enced local guides – depriving these
rural communities of tourists.
“Kerala has a lot to offer. I am sure
this experiment in Kerala will become
a model for other states of the country
as well,” said Mr Modi, who has been
championing the upgrading of roads,
railways and metro systems ahead of
the G20 in September.
The world’s longest river cruise
departed from Varanasi in January,
with a 51-day itinerary through multi-
ple Indian states and neighbouring
Bangladesh.
It was followed by Kolkata’s metro
system – the oldest in the country –
revealing its first underwater line,
which travels under Hooghly River. It
will open to the public later this year.
