Village development scheme in
Arunachal to protect territory
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on
Monday visited a Himalayan frontier
state that China claims as part of its
territory to launch a Rs48 billion
rupee ($780 million) development
scheme he said would add to the
security of the unmarked border area.
The programme will cover nearly
3,000 villages in four states and one
federally administered territory on the
Chinese border and is aimed at
helping reverse migration out of
border areas.
China said it opposed Mr Shah’s
visit to the eastern state and viewed
his activities in the area as violating its
territorial sovereignty.
India debunks report of suspended
trade talks with UK
Trade talks between India and the
United Kingdom have not been
suspended and will continue, three
officials said on Monday, responding to
a British newspaper report that said
India had “disengaged” from the talks
after London failed to condemn Sikh
separatists.
An official in India’s foreign
ministry said progress in the trade
talks and New Delhi’s concerns around
Sikh separatist activities in the UK
should not be interlinked. A
diplomatic official in the British High
Commission in New Delhi said trade
talks would continue in as scheduled
and security officials in London were
addressing India’s concerns about Sikh
separatist activities in the UK.
Indian army finds rifle used to kill
four soldiers at base
The Indian army on Wednesday said it
had located an assault rifle believed to
have been used to kill four soldiers at
a military base in Punjab.
No one has been arrested over the
attack, which took place early on
Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred at the base’s
barracks and was “not a terror
attack”, senior police officer S.P.S.
Parmar said.
Inflation rate drops within Central
Bank target
India’s retail inflation fell within the
Central Bank’s target range for the first
time in three months as a series of
interest rate increases since last year
slowed demand in Asia’s third-largest
economy.
The consumer price index rose 5.66
per cent from a year earlier, according
to data released by the Statistics
Ministry on Wednesday. The reading is
lowest in 15 months, and compares
with a median forecast for a 5.70 per
cent gain in a Bloomberg survey of
economists.
Price gains accelerated to 6.44 per
cent in February.
Editors decry government move to
police online news
The Editors Guild of India is deeply
disturbed by the government’s move to
police news on social media through a
self-appointed fact-checking unit, the
industry body said last Friday,
describing the new rules as draconian
and akin to censorship.
The amendments to the country’s IT
rules forbids platforms from
publishing, sharing or hosting “fake,
false or misleading information” about
the government.
Dalai Lama apologises for asking
boy to suck his tongue
Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual
leader who lives in India, apologised
on Monday after a video surfaced
online showing him kissing a boy on
the lips at a public event earlier this
year and then saying to the child,
“Suck my tongue.”
In the video, which was taken on
Feb 28 in Dharamsala in northern
India, the 87-year-old Buddhist leader
speaks briefly to the boy in front of an
audience before kissing him and then
pulling him close to his outstretched
tongue.
The apology issued by the Dalai
Lama’s office said the boy, who was
not identified, had asked the spiritual
leader if he could give him a hug,
making no reference to the kiss or the
extended tongue. It said the Dalai
Lama’s actions had been lighthearted.
Tiger population rises above 3,000
India’s wild tiger population –the
largest in the world – has risen above
3,000, according to a census released
on Sunday, boosting efforts to
conserve the endangered species.
The Indian census estimated there
were 3,167 tigers in the wild across the
country, up from 2,967 reported in the
last such exercise. Surveys are
conducted every four years, using
camera traps and computer programs.
Normal monsoon rains expected
India is likely to receive normal
monsoon rainfall this year, the
state-run weather office said on
Tuesday – the fifth straight year of
normal or above-normal summer rains
that spur farm and economic growths
in the country.
A spell of good rains could lift farm
and wider economic growth and help
bring down food price inflation, which
jumped in recent months and
prompted the Central Bank to raise
lending rates.
The rains, which usually lash the
southern tip of Kerala around June 1
and retreat by September, are
expected to total 96 per cent of the
long-term average this year, said
Secretary at the Ministry of Earth
Sciences M. Ravichandran.
The India Meteorological
Department defines average rainfall as
96-104 per cent of a 50-year average
of 87cm for the four-month season.
Fallen tree kills seven, injures five
others in Maharashtra
At least seven persons died and five
others injured after a tree fell on a
shed made of tin sheets in Akola
district in Maharashtra, a local police
officer said on Monday.
The victims had gathered for a
religious ceremony outside a temple
when the incident occurred. As many
as 35 people were trapped under the
rubble after the tree fell amid heavy
rainfall and strong winds in the area
on Sunday evening.
The locals helped district officials in
the rescue work.
Two killed, 10 injured in
firecracker blast in Telangana
At least two people were killed and 10
others injured, some of them critically,
on Wednesday after firecrackers
triggered a fire and cylinder blast
during a political party meeting in
Telangana.
The accident took place at
Cheemalapadu village in Khammam
district. Police said the firecrackers
were set off in honour of a lawmaker
of Bharat Rashtra Samiti. Some of the
firecrackers landed on a hut, triggering
a fire and blast of a liquefied
petroleum gas cylinder.
Indian startups go to court to stop
Google’s new in-app billing system
A group of Indian startups has asked a
court to suspend Alphabet Google’s
new in-app billing fee system until
the country’s antitrust body
investigates the US firm for alleged
non-compliance with its directives,
a legal filing showed.
The Alliance of Digital India
Foundation last month asked India’s
antitrust regulator to investigate
Google for devising a new system
startups say still charges them a high
service fee, despite an antitrust
directive in October to allow use of
third-party billing services for in-app
payments.

A woman walking past a
Covid-themed mural, amid
the spike in new cases in
Chennai.
India registered a
single-day rise of 7,830
new coronavirus infections
on Wednesday – the
highest in 223 days – and
the count of active cases in
the country has increased
to 40,215, according to the
Union Health Ministry.
Covid-19 death toll has
increased to 531,016, with
16 new fatalities reported
on Wednesday.
Drills are being carried
out in hospitals across the
country and some states
have reintroduced mask
mandates.
The new variant of
Omicron, XBB.1.16, is
believed to be responsible
for the increase in
infections.

Dreams do come true.
Migrant worker Kalimuthu Ramesh
(right) from Tamil Nadu can testify to
that.
After an outstanding performance
in the Westlite Integration Cup, organ-
ised by
tabla
!
, Zee TV and Westlite
Accommodation on Dec 18 last year,
Ramesh had expressed his wish to play
international cricket.
In a story published by
tabla
!
on
Dec 30, he said: “I don’t want a car or
house. I only want to appear on TV,
playing international cricket.”
The 33-year-old was on Tuesday
selected for the Singapore national
team in the 50 overs ACC Premier
Cup, a gateway to the 2023 Asia Cup,
which will be held in Kathmandu,
Nepal, from April 18 to May 2.
According to International Cricket
Council (ICC) rules, he is qualified to
play for Singapore as he has been a
resident here for three years.
Singapore, currently ranked 30th in
the world in the ICC T20 rankings,
form part of Group B for the Premier
Cup along with the United Arab
Emirates, Hong Kong, Kuwait and
Bahrain.
Group A consists of Oman, Nepal,
Qatar, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
Singapore play Hong Kong in their
opening match at the Mulpani Cricket
Stadium on April 18.
“I was just about to sleep, close to
midnight on Tuesday, when I heard a
ping on my mobile phone,” said
Ramesh.
“The message read I had been
picked for the national side.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes. I
whooped in joy and immediately
called my family in India and all my
close well-wishers to convey the
news.”
Fellow migrant worker from Tamil
Nadu, Thilipan Omadurai, was also
selected for the first time to the
national side.
Ramesh, who hails from Keelkudi
village in Ramanathapuram district,
took up a job in Singapore in 2011 so
he could make some money and in-
dulge in his passion – cricket.
From playing tennis-ball cricket ini-
tially, he has since progressed to be-
come a force in local cricket with his
searing pace and ability to smack the
ball with tremendous power.
He is also an agile, aggressive and
smart fielder.
“It is no surprise that Ramesh has
been picked for the national team as
he is exceptionally hardworking and
disciplined,” said Ashish Gandham,
captain of Millennium United Cricket
Club (MUCC), for whom Ramesh
plays for the Singapore Cricket Associa-
tion (SCA) league.
“He has the all-round capability
and skills to make an impact in any
match, but what stands out is his
attitude. He will always give his very
best and looks to contribute in every
way possible, be it through batting,
bowling or commitment in the field.
“He has worked hard on his fitness
and is a great asset for any captain and
team.”
Ramesh, who leads MUCC Tha-
laivas in the SCA Development
League, is so singularly focused on his
ambition to play international matches
that he has no friends outside cricket.
The Sri Sabari Engineering employee
said: “I work, play and go to Tekka.
That’s all.”
Ramesh shed 13kg over the last
three months to weigh 80kg and has
been running up to 6km every day. He
also works out regularly at the gym.
“I had made up my mind that I
would be fit and ready for the new
season,” Ramesh told
tabla
!
on
Wednesday.
“I had a feeling I would be called
up to play in big games. I did not want
to waste the opportunity. I want to
make an impression.”
In Nepal, Ramesh will face sides
such as UAE, Nepal, Oman, Hong
Kong, Qatar, Kuwait, Malaysia and
Bahrain who are ranked higher than
Singapore.
Singapore’s ranking slid over the
past few months due to some mediocre
performances in ICC tournaments.
“It is wonderful to see a raw talent
make it to the Singapore national
team,” said former India Under-19
all-rounder and Singapore interna-
tional Dharmichand Mulewa.
“But Ramesh will find international
cricket a different ball game. He will
not find it easy and have to prove he
can match some of the best players
from associate nations.”
Ramesh is confident he will be able
to showcase his wares in his first
international outing.
“I will go 100 per cent,” he said.
“I am determined to do well and
repay the faith of my supporters who
helped me develop over the years.”
