Arrested Delhi ministers Sisodia
and Jain quit cabinet
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish
Sisodia resigned on Tuesday as he
insisted the allegations levelled against
him were “false”. He was arrested on
Sunday by the Central Bureau of
Investigation over allegations of
irregularities in the framing and
implementation of a new excise policy.
Health Minister Satyender Jain,
who is in custody for alleged
corruption, also resigned. The
Enforcement Directorate arrested him
on May 30 last year in a
money-laundering case.
Their Aam Aadmi Party has denied
any wrongdoing.
Q4 2022 growth slows to 4.4% on
weaker global demand
India’s quarterly economic growth
slowed to 4.4 per cent in the fourth
quarter of 2022, official estimates
showed on Tuesday, as weaker global
demand and high inflation weigh on
the world’s fifth-largest economy.
Quarterly data showed GDP growth
down from 6.3 per cent in the previous
quarter after consumption weakened
following India’s festive season.
But the National Statistics Office’s
full-year forecast for the year ending
March 31 remained unchanged at 7
per cent, ranking India’s economic
outlook above every other major
country.
Security forces battle Kashmir
militants after killing
Security forces shot dead two militants
in Kashmir in a 12-hour battle on
Tuesday. A soldier was also killed.
The battle occurred in a village
south of Srinagar after security forces
launched a manhunt for the suspected
killers of a security guard who had
been shot dead on Sunday in a nearby
village, said Kashmir Police Chief Vijay
Kumar.
“One of the slain militants, Aquib
Mushtaq, was responsible for killing
(security guard) Sanjay Kumar Nath,”
he said.
Improvised bomb kills policeman
in Chhattisgarh
A policeman was killed on Sunday
after an improvised explosive device
(IED) planted by Naxals (insurgents)
went off in Chhattisgarh.
The blast occurred in the Orchha
area of Narayanpur district as the
policeman was part of a contingent
patrolling the area.
Crime agency attaches Joyalukkas
chairman’s assets worth $50m
The Enforcement Directorate on Friday
said it had conducted searches and
seized assets worth Rs3.06 billion ($50
million) belonging to the chairman of
jeweller Joyalukkas in a case related to
alleged violation of foreign exchange
laws.
The agency claimed that a huge
amount of cash was transferred to
Dubai from India through “hawala”
channels and then invested in Joy
Alukkas Jeweller, Dubai, which is fully
owned by Mr Alukkas Varghese Joy.
It added that it searched five
premises of the jewellery group on Feb
22 and found evidence of Mr Joy’s
“active involvement”.
Heatwaves expected between
March and May
India is likely to experience heatwaves
between March and May, especially in
the key wheat-producing central and
northern states, the weather office said
on Tuesday, as the country recorded its
highest maximum temperature in
February.
A heatwave for the second straight
year might dent production of wheat,
rapeseed and chickpeas, and
complicate government efforts to bring
down food inflation.
Higher temperatures might also lift
power consumption above supplies
during the summer season.
Adani rebuffs report of $538m
fund raise against assets
The Adani Group on Monday denied a
media report that it was in talks with
global credit funds to raise up to
US$400 million ($538m) in debt
against some of its Australian assets,
calling it “totally false and untrue”.
The Indian conglomerate operates
the Carmichael coal mine, North
Queensland Export Terminal (NQXT)
and a solar farm in Australia.
NQXT, a major port for Queensland
coal exports controlled by the Adani
family trust, is being considered to
raise funds to repay promoter debt, the
Economic Times reported.
Air India to triple aircraft fleet in a
few years
Air India plans to triple its current
fleet of 113 aircraft in a few years as it
inducts new aircraft and refurbishes
older planes as part of a bigger
overhaul, chief executive officer
Campbell Wilson said on Tuesday.
Tata group-owned Air India has said
it would increase its fleet by a record
470 aircraft, funding the US$70 billion
order with internal cash, equity and
through sale-and-leasebacks. The
airline will purchase 220 of the planes
from Boeing and 250 from Airbus.
Court orders jail for two Maiden
executives over shoddy drugs
A court in Sonipat, near New Delhi,
has sentenced two Maiden
Pharmaceuticals executives – company
founder Naresh Kumar Goel and
technical director M.K. Sharma – to 30
months in jail for exporting
substandard drugs to Vietnam a
decade ago.
The Indian government suspended
production at Maiden last October for
violations of manufacturing standards
after the World Health Organisation
said four of its cough syrups could
have killed dozens of children in
Gambia.
Student arrested for taking exam
on behalf of younger brother
A BA student was arrested on Monday
for taking the art paper of the ongoing
Uttar Pradesh Board examination in
Unnao district on behalf of his
younger brother.
The accused, identified as Shadab of
Sherpur Qalan, said he appeared for
the examination at the Shakuntala
Devi Kashiram Vidyalaya in
Mustafabad as his younger brother’s
drawing was “poor”.
A team of checkers found him
impersonating his brother Muqeem
and handed him over to the police.
Employees wear helmets while
working in crumbling power office
The dilapidated condition of a building
of the Uttar Pradesh power
department in Baraut town has forced
more than 40 employees, including
engineers, clerks and contractual
workers, to wear helmets while
working inside the building.
“We wear helmets to protect
ourselves as we do not know when the
plaster from the ceiling will fall and
hurt us. There have been incidents in
the past when workers were injured.
Although no major accident has
happened, it is too risky,” said a
computer operator, adding that the
building was “a tragedy waiting to
happen”.
“The situation gets worse during
rainy season. Cracks have appeared in
the roof and rainwater keeps
dripping.”
District Magistrate Raj Kamal Yadav
has asked the UP Power Corporation
to take immediate action.

Holi is a major festival in
India, celebrated with
splashes of colours.
But Barsana, a historical
town in Uttar Pradesh, has a
unique way of celebrating
the festival.
It observed Lathmar Holi
on Feb 28 – before the actual
Holi on March 8 – to honour
Lord Krishna and his
beloved Radha.
In Barsana, the home of
Radha, men splashed women
with colour while the
women playfully retaliated
by hitting the men with
sticks to chase them away.
Legend has it that when
Lord Krishna visited Barsana
to spray colours on Radha,
she and her friends playfully
hit him with sticks and drove
him out of the town.
In Mathura, where Lord
Krishna is believed to have
been born, Holi is observed
for 25 days.
