Government lashes out at critics
after BBC raids
India’s foreign minister has hit out at
“scaremongering” critics who claim
the country’s democracy is being
corroded, singling out billionaire
George Soros.
Mr S. Jaishankar rejected
accusations that multiple raids on the
BBC’s India offices showed Prime
Minister Narendra Modi and his
government were veering toward
authoritarianism.
“There are still people in the world
who believe that their definition, their
preferences, their views must override
everything else,” he said.
Indian tax authorities raided the
BBC’s offices in New Delhi and
Mumbai just weeks after the
broadcaster aired a documentary on
Mr Modi’s actions during deadly
sectarian riots in 2002.
Indian economy to contribute more
than 15% of global growth
The emerging markets and developing
economies are expected to account for
around 80 per cent of the global
growth this year and the next. Of this,
India alone is expected to contribute
more than 15 per cent, said the
International Monetary Fund’s
Managing Director Kristalina
Georgieva on Wednesday.
Terming India’s strong economic
performance a “bright spot”,
Ms Georgieva said that, beyond being
the global growth engine, India is
uniquely positioned to bring countries
together.
12 more African cheetahs arrive
in India
Twelve cheetahs from South Africa,
including five females and seven males,
landed in Madhya Pradesh on
Saturday on an Indian Air Force C-17
aircraft. Later, the cheetahs were
released in the Kuno National Park,
where eight cheetahs were flown in
from Namibia five months ago.
Cheetahs were declared extinct in
India in 1952. The introduction of the
cheetahs is an ambitious translocation
project of the Indian government.
Borg walks out after Karnataka
chief minister arrives late
Legendary tennis player Bjorn Borg
walked out of a ceremony to honour
him in Bengaluru on Tuesday after
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj
Bommai turned up late.
The programme at the Karnataka
Lawn Tennis Association courts was
scheduled for 9.30am but Mr Bommai
arrived at 11.15am. By then, Borg,
who is on a trip to India with his wife
Patricia, had stepped away to watch his
son Leo play at the Bengaluru Open,
an ATP Challenger event.
Third moon mission clears key test
on functioning of satellite in space
India’s third moon mission
Chandrayaan-3 has successfully
undergone a key test that ensures
functionality of the satellite
subsystems in space and their
compatibility with the expected
electromagnetic levels, officials said on
Monday.
The Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) described the test
at the UR Rao Satellite Centre in
Bengaluru as a major milestone.
India plans to launch
Chandrayaan-3 in June.
Insurgents kill two policemen in
Chhattisgarh
Two policemen were killed on Monday
in a Naxal (insurgent) attack in
Chhattisgarh, police said.
“While one policeman was killed on
the spot, the other succumbed while
being removed to hospital,” said senior
police officer Abhishek Meena.
Reports said the policemen were
heading to the Bortalab police camp in
Rajnandgaon district on a motorcycle
when they came under attack.
Allotment of 72 industrial plots to
Uttar Pradesh minister cancelled
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
government has cancelled the
allotment of 72 industrial plots to
Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises
Minister Rakesh Sachan in Uttar
Pradesh’s Fatehpur which were lying
idle for over a decade.
It also ordered an inquiry to check
“procedural lapses” of the officials
involved in the process of land
allotment.
The 72 industrial plots were allotted
to Mr Sachan when he was a
Samajwadi Party MP from Fatehpur in
2012-13. On Feb 11 Laghu Udyog
Bharati’s Fatehpur unit president
Satyendra Singh questioned in a letter
to the commissioner and director
(industries) and the Fatehpur district
magistrate why industrial plots were
allotted to a minister.
Indians splurge record US$10
billion on foreign trips
Despite talk of gloom around the
world, Indians spent a record US$10
billion in overseas travel in the first
nine months of this fiscal year,
according to data released by the
Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Between April and December 2022,
Indians shelled out US$9,947 million,
surpassing the previous record of
US$7 billion before the pandemic.
They splurged US$1,137 million on
travel in December 2022 alone.
Panel to assess impact of higher
temperatures on wheat
The government has set up a panel of
officials to assess the impact of rising
temperatures on the wheat crop, as the
weather office warned that above
normal temperatures would prevail in
key producing states.
The world’s second biggest wheat
producer earlier this month said its
production was likely to rise 4.1% to a
record 112.2 million tonnes. However,
a lack of winter rains has raised
temperatures in some parts of the
northern states where farmers grow
wheat.
Government invokes emergency
law to maximise power output
The Central government on Monday
invoked an emergency law to force
power plants that run on imported
coal to maximise output ahead of an
expected record surge in power usage
over the next few months, reported
Reuters.
Many of India’s power plants that
use imported coal, including those
owned by Adani Power and Tata
Power in Gujarat, have not operated at
full capacity because they have found
it difficult to compete with power
generated from cheap domestic coal.
Formula One launches F1 TV
in India
India’s “very strong mobile market”
is one of the main factors behind
Formula One launching its TV
streaming product F1 TV in the
country, the sport’s director of media
rights Ian Holmes said.
Formula One has enjoyed increasing
popularity in India, with the country
hosting F1 races at the Buddh
International Circuit between 2011
and 2013. In recent years, Star Sports
aired Formula One in India, while
video platform Hotstar streamed the
races.
F1 TV, which will be launched in
India ahead of the 2023 season, gives
fans access to cameras mounted on the
20 cars as well as the traditional
broadcast feed for all race weekends,
including practice sessions, qualifying
sessions, races and sprint events.
Braving sub-zero temperatures at
3,960 metres, 75 runners created
history on Tuesday by
participating in the world’s highest
frozen lake half marathon.
Videos from the event at the
Pangong Lake in Ladakh show
participants slowly jogging to
avoid slipping on the ice, as
onlookers can be heard cheering
them on.
The lake records a temperature
of -30 deg C in the winter.
The run, which found an entry
in the Guinness Book of World
Record, was aimed at promoting
sustainable winter tourism in
border villages of eastern Ladakh
to generate livelihood
opportunities for residents
especially in winter.
It was organised by the
Adventure Sports Foundation of
Ladakh in collaboration with the
Ladakh Autonomous Hill
Development Council, Tourism
Department and the Leh district
administration.
