India set to lose fastest-growing
major economy title
India is set to lose its fastest-growing
major economy tag this year, as
growth took a hit from weakening
demand at home and abroad.
Gross domestic product will grow 7
per cent in the fiscal year ending
March, according to the first official
estimate released by the Statistics
Ministry last Friday. That compares
with a 6.8 per cent expansion forecast
by the Reserve Bank of India, as well
as the median estimate in a Bloomberg
survey of economists.
That performance follows an 8.7
per cent pace of expansion in the
previous year, and will be second only
to Saudi Arabia’s expected 7.6 per
cent growth, thanks to gains from a
spike in energy prices.
Thousands join post-pandemic
pride parade in Delhi
Thousands of people took part in the
first Delhi Queer Pride march in three
years on Sunday as pressure grows for
legal recognition of same-sex marriage
in India. The Supreme Court is due to
hear in March a clutch of petitions
from gay couples seeking the same
marital rights as heterosexual couples,
five years after it struck down a
colonial-era ban on gay sex.
“Decriminalisation has targeted
only one aspect of it but there’s a
larger aspect and the rights are still not
there for the LGBTQ community,” said
Ajay Chauhan, a participant in
Sunday’s march.
Modi: Indians living overseas must
know facts on India’s growth
Terming Indians living overseas as the
country’s “brand ambassadors”, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi said they
would play a pivotal role in satisfying
the “growing curiosity” about India
across the world due to its “rapid
progress” across sectors in recent
years.
Delivering the inaugural address at
the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
Convention in Indore on Monday, Mr
Modi said that apart from knowledge
of the country’s culture and
spirituality, Indians living abroad
should also be armed with facts on
India’s growth story.
“I consider you all, pravasi
bharatiyas, the brand ambassadors of
India on foreign soil,” he said.
Wheat harvest could hit record
112 million tonnes
India’s wheat production is set to jump
to a record after all-time high prices
prompted farmers to expand planting
areas with high-yielding varieties and
good weather conditions, scientists and
traders told Reuters.
Higher wheat output could
encourage India, the world’s
second-biggest producer of the grain,
to consider lifting a ban on exports of
the staple and help ease concerns over
persistently high inflation in food
prices.
“This year production could rise to
112 million tonnes because of the
higher area and favourable weather,”
Mr Gyanendra Singh, director at the
Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley
Research, said.
Rajwinder waives right to
challenge extradition from India
The man accused of murdering
24-year-old Toyah Cordingley on a
Queensland beach four years ago has
told an Indian court that he wants to
return to Australia as soon as possible
to face trial.
Rajwinder Singh, 38, swore in a
“willingness statement” submitted to a
Delhi court magistrate that he wished
to formally waive his right to challenge
extradition.
The decision by the Australian
citizen of Indian origin circumvents a
legal battle that can drag on for years
in India’s clogged court system.
Court grants bail to ICICI Bank
ex-CEO Kochhar
An Indian court on Monday granted
bail to former ICICI Bank chief
executive Chanda Kochhar and her
husband after they were arrested last
month in connection with an alleged
loan fraud case involving the bank and
Videocon Group.
Kochhar was one of India’s
highest-profile business leaders before
she was removed as ICICI CEO in
2019 following allegations that the
bank, under her watch, sanctioned
“high value” loans to Videocon in
violation of its lending policies.
In return, Videocon’s owner
invested in NuPower Renewables,
founded by Kochhar’s husband
Deepak, the Central Bureau of
Investigation alleges.
The agency arrested Videocon
chairman Venugopal Dhoot last
month. All the parties have denied the
allegations of loan fraud.
125 die of heart attack amid
severe cold in Uttar Pradesh
At least 125 people died due to heart
attacks amid cold wave conditions in
Uttar Pradesh since the beginning of
this year, officials said on Monday.
The deaths were reported in
Kanpur, about 90km from the capital
Lucknow. The Laxmipat Singhania
Institute of Cardiology and Cardiac
Surgery in Kanpur said 54 people who
suffered heart attacks died during
treatment at the hospital, while 71
others were brought in dead.
Doctors at the hospital attributed
the abrupt increase in blood pressure
leading to heart attacks to cold wave
conditions prevalent in Kanpur and
adjacent areas.
Rare rhinos dodge poachers in
world’s top reserve
No rhinos were poached last year in
the world’s largest reserve for the
endangered animals in Assam state, in
what authorities said was the first time
since 1977.
The Kaziranga National Park in the
state is home to 2,200 great
one-horned rhinoceros, or two-thirds
of their world population. Poachers
killed more than 190 rhinos in Assam
between 2000 and 2021.
A record 27 rhinos were killed in
Assam each year in 2013 and 2014,
the data showed, as poachers sought to
sell their horns for thousands of dollars
in East Asia where they are prized as
medicine and jewellery.
Sania to retire after Dubai
tournament next month
Sania Mirza, India’s former doubles
world No. 1, said she will call time on
her career aged 36 after next month’s
Dubai Tennis Championships, after her
2022 retirement plans were delayed
due to injury.
Sania, regarded as her country’s
greatest women’s tennis player, has
won six Grand Slam doubles titles and
will compete in her final major this
month at the Australian Open, where
she bagged the women’s doubles
crown in 2016.

skyrockets in China

has shot up in China amid the massive
Covid-19 surge in the country.
“On the Chinese e-commerce
platforms at least four generic Covid
drugs produced in India – Primovir,
Paxista, Molnunat and Molnatris –
have been listed for sale in recent
weeks. Primovir and Paxista are both
generic versions of Paxlovid, while the
other two are generic versions of
Molnipiravir,” Chinese media outlet
Sixth Tone reported.

INDIA
US-based billionaire Darshan Dhaliwal
(right), who was awarded the Pravasi
Bhartiya Samman on Tuesday, has
clarified that Prime Minister Narendra
Modi did not apologise to him.
Some media reports claimed
Mr Modi “apologised” for Mr Dhali-
wal’s deportation from India in 2021
for allegedly supporting the farmers’
protest against the now-repealed agri-
culture laws.
“Elders never apologise. PM Modi
is a man of big stature, and I respect
him a lot. He said it’s my big heart
that despite once being sent back, I
came to India,” news agency ANI
quoted Mr Dhaliwal as saying.
Stressing recognition of the Indian
diaspora in a foreign land, he added:
“It’s an honour for me to get felici-
tated with the Pravasi Bhartiya Award.
Fifty years ago, people in foreign
countries didn’t know about us but
now India has become one of the
world’s biggest powers.”
Mr Dhaliwal was reportedly de-
ported on Oct 23, 2021, for allegedly
arranging food for protesting farmers
at Delhi’s borders.
His Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, for
his contribution in business and com-
munity welfare, has surprised many.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman is
the highest honour conferred on non-
resident Indians, persons of Indian
origin or an organisation or institution
established and run by them.
The Wire reported that after receiv-
ing the award from India’s President
Draupadi Murmu at the Pravasi
Bharatiya Divas conclave in Indore,
Madhya Pradesh, Mr Dhaliwal said a
conversation with Mr Modi took place
in April last year when Mr Modi, who
received a Sikh delegation at his
official residence in Delhi, apologised.
The meeting that Dhaliwal was
referring to was the Sadbhavana: A
Gesture Of Goodwill in April 2022,
which was led by Mr Modi and Union
minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
He claimed that Mr Modi told him:
“We committed a mistake by deport-
ing you but you were gracious to
accept our invitation.”
Mr Dhaliwal added: “PM Modi met
me in front of 150 people at his
residence.”
Recalling his deportation, Mr Dhali-
wal said the immigration officials at
the Indira Gandhi International Air-
port gave him two options.
“I was told to either stop the langar
and mediate with the farmers or go
back,” he said.
“I was not troubled when I was
deported during the farmers’ protest
and I have nothing much to say even
now. I am elated to have received such
an honour. I have always remained
with my community and will continue
to serve them.”

Metropolitan magistrate Komal Garg
of Delhi’s Patiala House Courts on
Wednesday slammed Shankar Mishra
(right), who is accused of urinating on
an elderly female passenger on an Air
India flight, while denying him bail.
She called the act “utterly disgust-
ing and repulsive” and said: “The
alleged act in itself is sufficient to
outrage the modesty of any woman.
Egregious conduct of the accused has
shocked the civic consciousness and
needs to be deprecated.”
Ms Garg underlined that Mishra
failed to join the probe even after a
notice was issued to him and his
presence was secured only upon the
execution of the non-bailable warrant.
“The conduct of the accused does
not inspire confidence. It has also
come on record that the accused tried
contacting the victim and the possibil-
ity of accused influencing the wit-
nesses cannot be ruled out,” she said.
The alleged urination incident oc-
curred on Nov 26 last year when a
drunk Mishra walked up to the
woman’s seat in the business class on a
New York-New Delhi flight, exposed
himself and urinated on her.
Earlier, Mishra’s counsel Manu
Sharma argued that the act was not
driven by sexual desire nor aimed at
outraging the woman’s modesty.
“The complainant’s case does not
put him as a lustful man. The trial will
take time but the man has been sacked
from his job after these allegations. He
is not a flight risk,” the lawyer said.
Advocate Ankur Mahindro, appear-
ing for the complainant, opposed the
bail application, stating that Mishra
was influential and could pressure the
complainant if released on bail.
He also pointed out that Mishra’s
father sent the complainant a What-
sApp message on the day Mishra was
arrested, but later deleted it. The
contents of the text message are not
known.
A magisterial court sent Mishra to
14-day judicial remand last Saturday,
denying police his custody.
A co-passenger on the flight told
NDTV that Mishra was “incoherent”
after too many drinks and kept asking
the same question repeatedly.
Mr Sugata Bhattacharjee, a US-
based doctor who was seated next to
Mishra on the Nov 26 flight, said he
flagged Mishra’s drunken state to the
crew.
“When he asked me the same
question multiple times, I realised he
was incoherent. I flagged it to the crew
and he just smiled,” Dr Bhattacharjee
told NDTV.
Mishra – who was sacked by his
company Wells Fargo after the incident
– told Dr Bhattacharjee that he was
drinking as he had a long day and had
not slept well.
“He told me he drank to get a good
night’s sleep,” said Dr Bhattacharjee.
Shortly after this conversation,
Mishra allegedly went to a 70-year-old
woman, unzipped and urinated on her.
When the flight landed in Delhi, he
walked away scot-free.
A day later, the woman wrote to
the Air India group chairman about
the appalling incident.
Air India filed a police complaint
only on Jan 4, claiming it didn’t go to
the police earlier as it felt both sides
had “settled the matter”.
Mishra was arrested last Friday from
Bengaluru, six weeks after his egre-
gious act.
Dr Bhattacharjee said he com-
plained to the airline too but nothing
happened.
“My moral responsibility was to
stand up for a fellow passenger, and
that is why I wrote a two-page com-
plaint. And it went nowhere,” he said.
Tata Sons Chairman N. Chan-
drasekaran admitted that Air India’s
response should have been swifter.
“We fell short of addressing this situa-
tion the way it should have been,” Mr
Chandrasekaran said in a statement on
Sunday.
