A drying Yamuna could endanger
The inordinate delay in granting
permission for the construction of a
barrage on the Yamuna in Agra – about
km from the Taj Mahal – could end
up endangering the monument of love.
According to experts, the Taj Mahal
is built on massive wooden slippers that
have shrunk over the years because of
the decrease in the flow of the Yamuna.
“If a barrage is constructed, it would
not only add to the life of the Taj Mahal
but would also beautify the
surroundings with a water front,” said
an Archaeological Survey of India
The beauty of the Taj Mahal is no
longer reflected in the waters of the
Yamuna because the river is almost dry
and filled with sewage waste.

India slapped higher tariffs on 28 US
products following Washington’s with-
drawal this month of key trade privi-
leges from New Delhi.
“I look forward to speaking with
Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi about
the fact that India, for years having put
very high tariffs against the United
States, just recently increased the tariffs
even further,” Trump said on Twitter.
“This is unacceptable and the tariffs
must be withdrawn!”
He will meet the Indian Prime Minis-
ter at this week’s G20 summit in Japan.
Mr Trump’s remarks could further
worsen a trade row that has led to tit-
for-tat tariffs from India and the US and
created an unease over the depth of
their security alliance.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo,
who was in New Delhi on Wednesday,
sought to reduce heightened trade ten-
sion with India, promising a renewed fo-
cus on negotiating better ties. But he

He stressed the strength of the US-In-

embark on a “new age of ambition”.
They needed to overcome a “nagging
misconception that our countries are
not able to be full partners,” he said, re-
ferring to India’s Cold War alliance with
the Soviet Union.
Mr Trump scrapped trade privileges

raising tariffs as the two nations en-

The two countries have also sparred
over India’s desire to buy the Russian-
made S-400 missile defence system and
purchase of oil from Iran – moves that
would run counter to US sanctions.
“Now you know why India recently
imposed retaliatory tariffs that had been
put off for a year,” said Ms Tanvi

India relations. “Makes for a useful card
