Women’s safety initiative
The much-awaited safety tool for
women – Emergency Response Support
System or Panic Button – was launched
on Tuesday across 18 states.
The button will enable women in
distress to make emergency calls
through a single number – 112 – that
will connect them to police, fire, health
and other helplines.
Leopard spotted at Thane mall
Forest department officials in Thane, a
city near Mumbai, on Wednesday
captured a leopard that was seen
leaving the Korum Mall. The leopard is
believed to have entered the mall after
scaling the perimeter wall. A search
operation was carried out after it was
seen moving towards the Vasant Vihar
residential area in the vicinity.
The forest department officials
traced the leopard to the basement of
the nearby Hotel Satkar Residency, laid
a trap and captured it.
Indian court orders eviction of
India’s Supreme Court has ordered the
eviction of more than one million
indigenous people and others who live
in forests, after the central government
failed to defend a law aimed at
protecting their rights.
The top court’s order was in
response to a petition against the Forest
Rights Act of 2006, filed by some
environmental groups who said the law
impeded conservation efforts.
The Supreme Court has asked
officials to ensure that the eviction is
made on or before the next date of
hearing – July 24.
Vande Bharat Express hits
India’s fastest train Vande Bharat
Express has run into problems since it
was flagged off on Feb 15. On
Wednesday, stones were pelted at the
train near Tundla in Uttar Pradesh as it
was going towards Kanpur from New
Delhi. A window was damaged.
On the return trip from Varanasi to
New Delhi, the train hit an animal
between the Barthana and Ekdil
stations near Tundla. It earlier collided
with a motorcycle, which was left on
the track by a man who was illegally
trying to cross it.
Assam celebrates harvest festival
Since Wednesday, members of the
Mishing tribe in Guwahati, Assam, have
been celebrating the Ali Ai Ligang, which
is known to be a vibrant annual festival
held over five days during the spring
“Ali” means root and seed, “ai”
means fruit and “ligang” means sow. The
sowing of paddy starts on this day ritually
among the Mishing community.

The food at the festival includes “Poro
Aapong” or rice beer, dried fish and
pork. “Purang Apin” (packed boiled rice)
is also specially prepared for the festival.
During the five days, activities such as
cutting trees, ploughing, fishing and
burning jungles are prohibited.
